15 Years of Serving Our Deputies and Their Families

Safer Stops and Preparing for the Future

In FDSA’s ongoing commitment to supporting you in serving and protecting our communities, we’re happy to highlight two developments that directly impact your ability to do your jobs safely and build a strong foundation for the next generation of deputies.

In the 2024 Legislative Session, the passing of Senate Bill 288 made a significant stride in improving your safety during traffic stops and emergencies. This bill provides a voluntary system for motor vehicle owners to designate certain medical conditions on their vehicle registrations. This information is invaluable for deputies and first responders, enabling more informed, compassionate, and safe interactions with individuals who may have special needs such as autism or physical limitations that would hinder their ability to comply with verbal orders.

By supporting this bill, we helped streamline emergency responses, fostering a safer environment for all Floridians. Every traffic stop is a potentially dangerous situation, and this law will help you identify anomalies faster to make more informed decisions quickly.

We are also excited to announce that the Florida Legislature has allocated $750,000 to fund our Law Enforcement Apprenticeship Program (LEAP). LEAP serves as a gateway for Floridians aspiring to become deputy sheriffs, sponsoring them to attend certified law enforcement academies.

This initiative, supported by FDSA, offers a structured path that includes an up-close-and-personal view of law enforcement for those interested in the profession.

Please spread the word to anyone who may be interested so they can apply to LEAP and take the first step toward becoming a deputy sheriff.

We are grateful for another successful session and remain dedicated to supporting these initiatives and ensuring their successful implementation. Thank you for your support of FDSA and your dedication to the communities we serve.
