As part of our mission to serve those who protect others, we also advocate for and provide opportunities to support future deputy sheriffs. FDSA has developed programs to help Floridians attend certified law enforcement academies across Florida.
LAW ENFORCEMENT APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM (LEAP)
Once a candidate is hired by a Florida Sheriff’s Office and enrolled in a certified law enforcement academy, LEAP pays for training and resources while they are enrolled. This new program is improving the process of joining a law enforcement agency in Florida.
HOW IT WORKS:
Becoming a Florida Sheriffs' Deputy
Apply for employment at a qualified sheriff's office.
Successfully pass your background check and obtain employment with a qualified sheriff's office.
Apply for and be admitted into one of Florida's certified law enforcement academies.
Successfully complete the sheriff's field training program.

All Florida sheriffs offices are eligible to participate in the Law Enforcement Apprenticeship Program (LEAP). If you or your agency are interested in participating, contact our team.
Yes. To be sponsored by LEAP, candidates must be hired by an eligible Sheriffs office in Florida. Once you are hired, your human resources department will have the required paperwork.
Yes. The local Sheriffs office human resources department will have the required paperwork for the law enforcement academy.
Yes. Candidates who have been hired by a qualified sheriffs’ office and are still in training are eligible.
Candidates are paid on a regular payroll schedule through their employer during their training. The Sheriffs office is responsible for requesting reimbursement for their training costs through the program.
